Our little sports monster was tired of playing soccer in the backyard with just Dad, so we figured we’d get him in a little soccer league this year. He’s at the bottom end of his league’s age category (4-6), but it doesn’t bother him that he’s one of the smallest kids on the field! He’s been having fun so far…
Before the season started, most kids had to do a little ‘evaluation’ in order to ensure that the teams were fairly split up. Josh was little enough that he didn’t have to, per se, but we took him anyway. He was excited to put on his little soccer cleats and shin pads / socks and give it a go! He took to the few drills with some tenacity, he did pretty well for a first timer!
Josh’s team this year is ‘Newcastle’, he chose the number 7 (as this is his favorite number, according to him). Being inexperienced, he often is at the back of the pack that is chasing after the ball, or just wandering around the field nowhere near the play – but he gets the odd kick in here and there, hopefully it will be enough to coax him to get a little more ‘into’ it… no rush, in good time.
As you can see, they forgot to cut the grass before their first game…!
Jenn volunteered to be a coach as well for Josh’s team – she used to coach little kids back in Edmonton, she thought she’d give it a go again now that Josh is playing. So far, so good! They don’t really keep score in an official sense – so we can’t report on what her win / loss ratio is, but I think she’s on the winning side so far! ;0)
Ryley, of course, sometimes wants in on the action. Mostly when it’s snacktime!
