Our Saturday mornings are busy, as mentioned in an earlier post.  Josh and I have been doing football (soccer) on Saturday mornings at 9am, then dashing off to Roller Hockey (Learn-to-Skate) for 11am… (Jenn takes the Roo to her gymnastics at this time).  We then meet up at the house (or in town) for lunch afterwards and then we go off to whatever else Jenn has planned for us in the afternoon!

Anyway, Josh has been doing an excellent job playing football.  Last year he was one of those kids who would mainly stand around and not really be paying attention; this year he’s right in there, making great tackles and big kicks!  He’s definitely enjoying it and it shows in the effort he gives when he plays.

Typically, soccer practice consists of about a half hour of drills then a half hour of games on a small pitch.

Making some big tackles!

Later on in the morning we zip home after football, grab Josh’s hockey gear and get over to the new hockey rink purpose-built by the Bermuda Inline Hockey League for the kids.  It’s a great facility, even if the floor is a little slippery when it’s wet!

The first part of the year they didn’t have sticks, they were just learning the basics of skating without the distraction of a ball / stick, which seemed to pay off as Josh is a pretty decent little skater already.  He didn’t have any experience skating before this, he’s picked it up quickly, which is great.

After a few sessions without sticks, they all got to start using them and started learning how to stick handle, shoot, pass, etc.  To help separate the kids for drills, they all got a cool practice jersey bearing an NHL team logo on the front, Josh was just fine being a Bruin!

The coaches are all guys that I play ball hockey with, including ‘Coach
Chad’, teaching Josh the ins and outs of stick handling (above).  I
sometimes go on with them to help out if they are short a coach for
whatever reason.

Having a great time… and he shoots, he scores!

They don’t play any actual games in the Learn to Skate group, but lately they’ve been doing a few little scrimmages in one end of the rink as part of their drills.  It’s fun to watch!

The 2012-2013 Bruins!

Sadly, both hockey and football (soccer) are both coming to an end soon, and while it might be nice to relax a bit on Saturday mornings, Josh and I don’t mind being busy playing sports ’cause it’s a lot of fun!
