We had heard of Geocaching several years ago – a friend of ours had her Dad down to the island and while out on the boat he asked us if we could help him find this ‘cache’ out in the middle of nowhere on some rocks, with the assistance of his handheld GPS unit.  It was pretty neat.  We didn’t do any Geocaching for ourselves, however, until just this Christmas holiday.  Jenn thought it would be a good activity to do to get out of the house, and it was!

The Department of Conservation Services has their own “Geotour” on their website; there are 20 caches to find in total, typically they were located in or around one of the government parks from one end of the island to the other!

We actually don’t have a hand held GPS unit, but were able to ‘make due’ with the conservation website map, my iPhone, and the geocaching.com app.  You click on the link to the cache location on the map, it would open in the app, hit ‘navigate to the geocache’ and off you go!  Pretty fun.

One thing we found very cool about this adventure is that it took us to lots of places that we hadn’t even been to before on the island!  Places like Cooper’s Island and a few other parks that proved to be hidden gems!

We spread this adventure out over a few weekends during the holiday and beyond, and every once in a while Cooper got to come along as well!

There were a few that took a good 15-20 minutes to find once we were in the vicinity – and there was one elusive one that we actually still can’t find, we ended up getting 19 of the 20 caches available.  We are thinking it might be easier with a proper GPS unit, but I think it was just missing!  ;0)

All in all, a fun adventure!  We’ll see if we can’t get that last one here someday so we can claim our Geocaching GeoCoin from the Department of Conservation Services!  If you’re bored one weekend, I would recommend this as an activity for sure.  ;0)
