I suppose one – er, three – sports for Jenn isn’t enough (triathlon!), she’s been talking about getting into the mountain biking circuit for a little while now.  And yes, we use the term mountain biking to describe the type of bike, not the terrain, as of course we have no mountains here!

There is a mountain biking club here called Fat Tire Massive, who held a session to dole out some biking tips to whomever was interested (kids & adults alike) at the Botanical gardens today – Jenn and Josh thought it would be fun to give it a try.

The first lesson was about controlling your bike on a loose surface and to control your skidding, which was pretty interesting.  Basically zoom down a hill on a gravel path and slam on your brakes (after some explanation on technique of course).  No incidents to report, thankfully, though Josh nearly bit it but recovered nicely!

Ryley didn’t want to participate (at first) but was there with her bike and was goofing around while I did what I always do…

Managed to find a fairly steep hill to climb, which proved to be quite difficult!

Then at the end there was a little hilly loop that everyone did some laps around to finish off the session.  Ryley decided it looked like fun so gave it a go and did great!

Some well-deserved ice cream after supper after a hard day on the bike.  Mmmm…

We’ll see if Jenn will get around to doing a few of the races this year…
