A close finish!
The America’s Cup is in full swing, we had taken in lots of the AC events since it began at the end of May (see my previous post) and have continued to do so since then! Jenn and I were able to get our picture taken with the AC trophy while at the Longtail Lounge, the kids got their opportunity a few days later on Friday of that week; we braved a decent crowd at the Vineyard Vines store in town after work to get a quick snap with it. Check!
Saturday (10th) was the first day of the Challenger playoffs, where Artemis (Sweden) and Emirates (New Zealand) started their battle for the right to sail against Oracle (USA) in the finals. Unfortunately we had a few things to do on Saturday so we skipped out on the AC for one day before heading to the Village on a rainy Sunday for some more racing. Donned in rain jackets we found a spot under a big umbrella to watch NZ pull ahead 4-2 in the best-of-9 series. The rain let up while we were out there and it was quite pleasant while we hung out and watched some the entertainment and enjoyed the Village for the rest of the afternoon.
The week was mostly ‘business as usual’ for us, not much AC action other than keeping up with the racing on TV / radio, and I took a lunch hour one day mid-week to check out a bit of the Superyacht sailing regatta, which was held off of St. George’s. I saw a few of the really nice boats – from really far away – but it was still cool to see them out there. All the spectator boats following them around still lent an impressive sense of scale to the big beautiful yachts like the Maltese Falcon.

Dancing on the big screen
Back to the AC Village we went on Saturday and Sunday for the start of the big event, the America’s Cup Match. NZ finished off Sweden early the previous week and all were abuzz about the big rematch between USA and NZ. The weather had certainly taken a turn since last weekend as this time our umbrellas were to keep cool, not dry! With the breeze on the low end of the range required for racing it was pretty hot in the village! We managed to survive the heat while chilling (baking?) on the artificial turf lawn on our hot bean bag chairs. Good thing there was a drink stand nearby! The kids had a great time – Josh found a few friends to play with and Ryley was loving the post-racing entertainment, Soca dancing the afternoon away (while getting herself on the big TV screen numerous times!)
The only disappointment really was the result of all four races, each going to team NZ, which puts them up 3-0 (they were -1 heading in) in the race to 7 points for the title. They get a break during the week and pick up again next weekend… guess where we’ll be!?
Stay tuned for more…!
