Fresh Pow!
Ah, yes – back to Big White for this year’s installment of our ski vacation!
Much remains the same as last year, which is partly why we like doing this annually – we know what to expect and always have a great time. The mountain treats us well and we’ll keep coming back until it doesn’t!
Our usual driver Russ brought us up from town after we had done some shopping – and not just groceries! Ryley needed a prom dress, and luckily was able to find one she liked in short order (phew!). We were happy to see there was more snow on the ground on the side of the road than last year, so we were optimistic about the conditions – this time of year is a bit of a gamble, though we usually get lucky and have at least some new snow while there!
Turns out conditions were great (just a few degrees below 0), and we got absolutely dumped on the first day (snow report said 27cm in a 24 hour period and 50 in the past 7 days) and it continued off and on for the next few days as well! So much so, that we needed a break after about day 4 to avoid burning out the legs – have to spread it out over the nearly two weeks we were there…

Good Times
Eventually the seemingly endless snow and overcast skies gave way to some very warm bluebird days – a bit too warm actually, as it was getting pretty sticky on much of the mountain. Only for a few afternoons, though, so can’t really complain!
We had the usual crew of Jenn’s family out for the first half of the trip. My folks and brother Kyle came out for the latter part of our vacation, they hadn’t been out for a while so it was good they could come out! Papa hit the slopes with us most days, we did our best to tire him out!
Again, we ticked all the usual boxes – Easter egg hunt, lots of great meals, Josh making churros, making puzzles, tubing in Happy Valley… and we added a few new ones, like attending the last Quiz Night of the season (we didn’t win 🙁 ), having a few apres ski sessions at the Woods pub in the village, and we managed to visit a bit with a few friends we don’t normally see like the Matthews, Suzy & Jim, the Orchards, and the Carrs (all have a current or former connection to Bermuda). Some of us also skiied in a few areas we hadn’t before, like the Cliff and a secret spot with a beer can Christmas tree… Jenn also mixed it up a bit with a few sessions of cross-country skiing to keep her fitness up for an upcoming trip to Japan! One other fun addition was that we wore some silly costumes on the ski hill for a day, it was dino-mite! 😉
Before closing out this year’s ski season we of course checked in on the house progress (as we skiied by it several times), things are coming along and we hope to have a nearly-finished chalet this time next year!
Until then…!
